"Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)

About the single car I could see as being the only car I'd need to own. The one that can do everything I need it to, and I think I've figured it out.
I think that car would be the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.
Now this makes sense if you look at my personal requirements for a car:
Powerful: We all know the SRT has plenty of power
Comfortable: Comfy seats, a nice arm-rest, and a big grippy wheel. All things the Jeep has. The luxurious leather and other things are just a bonus.
Ability to tow a camper: 7200lb towing capacity
Decently efficient: 19MPG highway from a 6.4 liter motor? Sign me up. Plus a huge 24.6 gallon tank helps with distance.
Reliable: From what I've heard, HEMIs are pretty damn bulletproof.
Price: This is the only downside to the SRT. But, you could always pick one up used.
Character: The SRT has this in strides. It's a manically nuts sports SUV with a 6.4 liter motor making 470 horsepower. It's not vulgar about it like the BMW M SUVs are either. Hell, to a non-enthusiast, I bet this would be mistaken for a normal Grand Cherokee.

maybe. I think the SRT had that center mount exhaust so a hitch is a no no.

Old one did. New one has the normal set-up.
I think they changed it because they were getting complaints about it.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

I'd be happy with a regular Hemi GC. Except for the fact that Durangos exist.

I like the Durango, but I keep hearing the GC is just... better somehow.

I have a 26 gallon tank and am *lucky* to get 19 mpg HW. Trust me, you won't get 19mpg average unless you do 90+% highway driving like a grandma.
You'll still need to refuel every 300-330 miles.

Still better than what I get now!
I really figured the cylinder deactivation would actually be able to accomplish that number.

I have had that same conversation with myself and have on numerous occasions come to the same exact conclusion. It really does check all the boxes except for price and fuel economy and who gives a fuck about gas mileage when you're driving a beast like that? That leaves cost. I could do a two year old one but they are hard to find around here.

With the like 5 or so Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Ram dealers around here. I don't think me finding a used one would be much of a problem. I could be wrong though.

19MPG highway******
My friend's dad owns one and he says that realistically, you'll see 19 highway if you really feather the throttle and use cruise control when possible. I think it's safe to say that you're not buying something like this to drive it conservatively.
I agree this is a great car except I can't afford 9 mpg city. That's just terrible.

thee is two reasons to buy a Durango over a GC.
The GCs shifter is a PITA. it looks like a normal auto shifter but you just like click it to shift. You get used to it, but it just doesn't feel luxurious, it feels stupid. Especially in comparison to the Durango's rotary dial shifter.
and the third row of seats. IMO if your going to drive an SUV you should be able to sit at least six people.

Used my friend. Depreciation on a niche SUV with a big engine has to be painful for the first owner.

I used an 8th of a 27 gallon tank to go ~12 miles today.
ANYTHING is better than what I'm getting now.

We have quite a few too, including "The World's Largest Dodge Chrysler Jeep Dealer!" but the problem is that it's a blue collar working class town and there aren't many who would buy a $70k Jeep. On the other side of the state is Seattle but they aren't much for big overpowered Jeeps. You want a Lotus, though, and I can find you one there. I'm sure when the time comes, though, I could find one. Where there is a will there is a way.

The shifter never really bothered me. I'm not a fan of those new rotary ones so the e-shifter or whatever it called wins by default.
Eh, me and 4 other people is all I'd ever need.

Wow. It's bad when you can measure efficiency in gallons per mile! Time to take the van in for a tune up?

It was time to take it in for a tune up about 5 years ago...

I get the same feeling. But I've had significant seat time in both lately and greatly prefer the Durango. It feels more car like to me, as well as more comfortable and I think it is better looking.

I know that feel bro. I drove a YJ got ~10mpg and misfired in 2 cylinders. Not being able to shift into 3rd didn't help mpg's either...

Buy 'Rango R/T and supercharge it. You'd make the same amount of power for less money!

That would be the answer, but it's too expensive, probably not-so-reliable, and can't haul a camper.

Cayennes have never really done it for me. Plus it's a VAG product ao the minute the warranty expires, everything will go to shit.

only thing i've learned from owning a few higher-end SUVs is that the sticker MPG is never ever accurate. If you have 5.3 liters of displacement or more... you're going to be spending a lot more time impressing you and your friends how quickly the damn thing moves (and not how impressive the fuel mileage is)
